How the numbers work

EPA (expected points added) values every play by how much it changed the points a team should expect to score on that drive, using nflfastR's model of down, distance, field position, time and score. A 3-yard run on 3rd and 2 is worth far more than the same run on 3rd and 8, and EPA knows it.

Opponent-adjusted EPA is our open alternative to proprietary schedule-adjusted ratings. Every play's EPA is fit against the offense, the defense and home field, separately for passes and runs, and each play is then credited net of the opponent it came against. A good offense that played good defenses moves up; one that feasted on bad ones moves down. Opponent strength is estimated from the regular season to date.

Pressure, blitz and coverage splits come from NFL Next Gen Stats charting, published by nflverse after each season ends: pressure from 2016, man and zone coverage from 2018. CPOE and catch rate over expected start in 2006, when air-yards data begins.

Rate stats use a minimum volume that scales with games played, so early-season charts are not ruled by a player with one great game. You can change it.
