How the numbers work

EPA (expected points added) values every play by how much it changed the points a team should expect to score on that drive, using the cfbfastR model of down, distance, field position and time. A play is a success when it adds expected points.

Opponent-adjusted EPA matters even more in college, where one team plays a top-ten schedule and another plays three FCS teams. Every play's EPA is fit against the offense, the defense and home field (none at neutral sites), separately for passes and runs, across every game including those against FCS teams. Each play is then credited net of the opponent it came against.

Havoc is the share of plays where the defense made a tackle for loss, sack, interception, pass breakup or forced fumble. Garbage time follows Bill Connelly's cutoffs: a lead of more than 43 points in the first quarter, 37 in the second, 27 in the third or 21 in the fourth.

FBS teams only, from 2008, the first season with complete play-by-play. Conferences are as they were that season.
